Psychosocial Variables in Selection for Donated Facial Procedures After Intimate Partner Violence

Abstract Details

The present study examined the psychosocial predictors of selection for pro bono restorative facial and dental procedures among 56 female victims of interpersonal violence. The study used archival, self-reported data collected by a not-for-profit organization in the Midwest to examine potential predictors to differentiate women accepted for free services from those who were rejected. The author created several composite variables to serve as the predictor variables--Mental Health, Safety, and Motivation. The two groups of women were similar on all demographic variables except for education level (X2 = 13.85, p = .001) and procedure type (dental, facial, or both; X2 = 7.59, p = .02). Logistic regression analyses with no control variables indicated a significant equation that accurately predicted 78.6% of cases in the accepted and rejected groups. One composite variable, Motivation, significantly and strongly predicted acceptance for facial procedures (z = 3.78, p = .001). Additional regression analyses controlling for education level and procedure type confirmed that the effects of Motivation remained statistically significant (z = 2.96, p = .003). Future research should explore how programs controlling access to restorative facial procedures can communicate and formalize their selection process, perhaps with special efforts made to reducing educational and motivational bias.
