Abstract
Previous research indicates that male juvenile offenders typically exhibit poor performance on measures of intelligence and academic achievement. In addition, certain index score patterns, most notably a PIQ>VIQ discrepancy, are common among male offenders, and have been found to predict offense severity. Research on the intelligence and academic performance of female offenders has produced variable results. This study explored the WISC-IV and WJ-III scores of 430 female offenders who underwent a 14-day evaluation in a multidisciplinary program conducted through an urban juvenile court. Within this sample: 1) Mean IQ and achievement scores were significantly lower than the standardization sample means; 2) Cluster analysis revealed 5 distinct subgroups of girls within the sample, which we labeled "Average", "Low Average", "Verbal Weakness", "Extremely Low", and "Low VCI/PRI", based on their WISC-IV profiles; and 3) Cluster membership did not predict offense severity. Limitations, implications, and directions for further research are discussed.
