Abstract
Heavy alcohol use and associated problems are persistent issues on college campuses. The current study investigated the efficacy of a brief resilience-based intervention on reducing college students’ alcohol-related problems. Using an on-campus residence hall and a longitudinal design, 181 participants (91 males; mean age= 19.5) were randomly assigned to one of two, 50 minute, single session conditions: RECAP (resilience-based intervention) and HS/SH (Social Norms Help Seeking Intervention/Sleep Hygiene). It was hypothesized that completing the RECAP program would 1) reduce alcohol related problems and 2) increase resilience 3 months post-intervention. Participants were assessed at the beginning and end of the academic semester. Treatment condition was the independent variable. Primary dependent variables were resilience and alcohol-related problems. Two 2 x 2 mixed model ANOVAs were conducted to test for main and interaction effects. The hypotheses were not supported. Participants who completed RECAP did not report fewer alcohol-related problems at Time 2 compared to the HS/SH condition (p=.283), or higher resilience scores (p=.763). Additional analyses explored relations between specific resilience factors and alcohol related problems. Resilience was not predictive of future alcohol-related problems but was associated with past problems, suggesting that resilience may be better understood as a dynamic individual difference variable that is affected by situational demands.
