The Effects of Apologies on LMX in the Workplace

Abstract Details

2017, Master of Arts (M.A.), Xavier University, Psychology.
The effectiveness of the leader-subordinate relationship in the workplace has been shown to impact organizational productivity and engagement (Ayman & Korabik, 2010; Howell & Hall-Merenda, 1999). However, the literature is lacking about how specific ways of communicating affects the dyadic relationship between the supervisor and their subordinate(s). The present study added to the leadership literature by examining the relationship between supervisory apologies, leader gender, and the quality of the relationship between the subordinate and supervisor. More specifically, this study aimed to better understand the true impact of a leader who uses apologetic language in the workplace. Data were collected from 202 participants who recalled the frequency their current supervisor used apologetic language in the workplace, as well as rated them on an LMX scale and humility scale. The results of t-tests showed no significant difference between women and men supervisors on reported apologies. There were also no differences in the LMX scores across women and men supervisors. The Pearson correlations showed significant positive correlations between frequency of supervisor apologies and both reported LMX scores and humility scores.
