Act Your Age! The Impact of Electronic Media on Perceptions of Older Adults

Abstract Details

2018, Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.), Xavier University, Psychology.
This study examined portrayals of older adults on television as perceived by younger (n = 94) and older adults (n = 73). Participants’ knowledge of and beliefs about older adults, discrimination toward older adults (experienced by older adults and exhibited by younger adults), and their perceptions of older adult characters on television were examined following viewing of three television clips (i.e., stereotypical, counter-stereotypical, and neutral). Older adults perceived each video as more offensive than younger adults; younger adults perceived the neutral and stereotypical clips as more accurate than older adults; however, older adults rated the counter-stereotypical clip as more accurate than younger adults; and, younger adults perceived the character depictions more favorably than older adults. The manner in which older adult characters are portrayed may impact older and younger adult viewers’ reactions to television programs. The author calls for further exploration into the implications of stereotyping of older adults across television genres.
