The Effect of Information Disclosure and Disability Type on Coworker Acceptance of Employees Receiving Disability Accommodations

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Arts (M.A.), Xavier University, Psychology.
Previous research on disability in the workplace has focused on understanding reactions to disability and accommodation, whereas little research has focused on means for improving reactions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential effects of disability type (mental vs. physical) and information disclosure on coworker acceptance of an accommodated employee. Based on previous research on reactions to disability it was hypothesized that coworker acceptance would be greater for an employee accommodated for a physical as opposed to a mental disability. Based on previous research on information disclosure and the uncertainty reduction theory, it was hypothesized that coworker acceptance of the accommodated employee would increase as disclosure level increased. Finally, an interaction was between disability type and disclosure level was proposed such that increased disclosure would lead to higher coworker acceptance for an employee accommodated for a physical as opposed to a mental disability. Participants included 229 MTurk workers who read a vignette describing a hypothetical coworker with a disability and suspected accommodation and completed a coworker acceptance measure. Results showed a significant main effect for disability type such that participants expressed more negative reactions toward a coworker accommodated for a mental (rather than physical) disability. No other hypotheses were supported. This study further supports the finding that mental disability tends to elicit less favorable reactions than physical disability.
