Resident Aggression, Job Satisfaction, and Organizational Citizenship Behaviors: Investigating the Effects of Certified Nursing Assistants’ Resilience

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.), Xavier University, Psychology.
Using the Cohen-Mansfield job stress model (1995), this study examined the relationships between resilience, organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs), job satisfaction and frequency and/or experience of resident aggression in a sample of long-term care certified nursing assistants (CNAs; N = 112). Participants completed self-report surveys measuring demographics, resilience, engagement in OCBs, job satisfaction, and frequency of and level of distress related to resident aggression. Results indicated significant positive relationships between CNAs’ resilience and engagement in OCBs and job satisfaction and engagement in OCBs. A significant negative relationship was found between frequency and/or distress related to resident aggression and job satisfaction. Resilience and frequency and/or distress related to resident aggression were significant predictors of both job satisfaction and engagement in OCBs. The current study provided novel and valuable information about long-term care nurse aides’ resilience, engagement in OCBs, job satisfaction, and frequency of and/or distress related to resident aggression. The findings underscore the importance of bolstering nurse aides’ resilience to potentially improve their job performance and satisfaction when managing difficult work situations.
