Abstract
Previous research has revealed a negative relationship between exercise and stress (Mavric et al., 2014; Pedisic et al., 2014; Salmon, 2001) and has demonstrated that there may be a connection among stress, job satisfaction, and employee burnout (Anderson & Pulich, 2001; Mayo Clinic Staff, 2015; Shirom, 2005). Stress can result in many health risks (e.g., headaches, Ironson, 1989; anxiety, Gupta & Beehr, 1979; depression, Murphy, Hurrell, Sauter, & Keita, 1995) and negative work outcomes (e.g., low productivity, Linn et al., 1985; low job satisfaction, Spector, 1997; high employee burnout, Faragher, Cass, & Cooper, 2005). The purpose of the present study was to expand on the research of stress and exercise and to examine the relationship that exercise may have with an employee’s job satisfaction and burnout. The establishment of exercise as a moderating factor between stress and both job satisfaction and employee burnout may lead to a better understanding of the importance of exercise and potential success of organizational wellness programs. Results of the present study failed to reveal the hypothesized moderating function of stress. However, there was a negative relationship between self-reported exercise and self-reported stress. The effects of exercise on an employee and an organization are broad and will need more research to identify the various relationships that may occur.
