Attitude Toward Teachers and School: Moderators of Inattention and Health-Related Quality of Life in Youth with Epilepsy

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.), Xavier University, Psychology.
Multiple factors affect the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of youth with epilepsy such as: age, time since diagnosis, presence/absence of seizures, side-effects, and number of antiepileptic medications (AEDs) (Ferro, 2014; Loiselle, Ramsey, Rausch, & Modi, 2016). Youth with epilepsy are also more likely to have deficits in executive functioning (EF) (Salpekar & Mishra, 2014) and are at increased risk of academic underachievement (Austin et al., 1998). The aims of this study were to examine the relationship between inattention and HRQOL, the predictive value of youth attitude toward teachers and school on HRQOL, and to explore the moderating role of attitude toward teachers and school between inattention HRQOL. Data from 124 youth and parent dyads were analyzed. Pearson correlations resulted in significant negative correlations between inattention and all HRQOL domains. Hierarchical multiple regressions identified Attitude towards school and Attitude toward teachers as significant predictors of HRQOL after controlling for factors associated with HRQOL. Student Attitude toward school and Inattention explained an additional 4% of the variance for Disease Impact, 21% for Cognitive, 24% for EF, and 6% of the variance for Mood. Student Attitude toward teachers and Inattention explained an additional 9% of the variance for Disease Impact, 15% for Cognitive, 22% for EF, and 15% on Mood/Behavior. The data did not reveal Attitude toward school or teachers as significant moderators of Inattention and HRQOL domains. This study suggests that youth perceptions of the academic environment are protective factors for youth-reported HRQOL, and reveals that inattention is a significant risk factor for youth-reported HRQOL.
