Cancer-related Masculine Threat, Body Compassion, and Prostate-specific Functioning in Prostate Cancer Patients

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.), Xavier University, Psychology.
Maladaptive beliefs about the impact of prostate cancer on one’s masculine identity have been shown to negatively impact treatment outcomes, such as urinary, bowel, and sexual functioning. The current study examined the role of body compassion as a mediator of the relationship between cancer-related masculine threat and prostate-specific functions. A sample of 76 prostate cancer patients were recruited from online prostate cancer communities (e.g., support groups, patient advocacy groups) to participate in the current study. Participants completed a series of self-report measures assessing cancer-related masculine threat (CMT), body compassion (BCS), and prostate-specific functioning (UCLA-PCI). Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to examine the role of body compassion as a mediator of the relationship between CMT and prostate-specific functioning. Results revealed that BCS mediated the relationship between CMT and UCLA-PCI-Urinary, but not UCLA-PCI-Bowel or UCLA-PCI-Sexual. Post hoc analyses revealed mean differences in urinary functioning across stages of recovery, suggesting that urinary functioning tended to improve over time in the current sample. Overall, the current study provides a psychological model through which recovery of urinary functioning in post-treatment prostate cancer patients can be understood. Results are discussed in the context of the broader literature on masculinity, body compassion, and prostate cancer treatment.
