Single Yoga Session Effect on Anxiety and Body Image in Eating Disorders

Abstract Details

While research supporting yoga as an effective intervention for eating disorders and anxiety has begun to emerge in the literature, less is known about the effects of a single yoga intervention on eating disorders and comorbid anxiety. This single-blind randomized control trial (RCT) examined the effects of a single session yoga intervention on the state anxiety, state social physique anxiety, and body image states levels in participants diagnosed with an eating disorder when compared to a control intervention. A total of 34 participants (27 women) aged 18-48 (M = 24.80, SD = 7.65) were randomized into either a Yoga intervention or a Control intervention. Participants were assessed pre- and post-intervention using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the State Social Physique Anxiety Scale (S-SPAS), and the Body Image States Scales (BISS). The results of a 2 X 2 mixed within-between-subjects ANOVA test revealed there was a significant interaction between group assignment and time on the State Anxiety subscale of the STAI (p < .05), such that the yoga group showed significantly lower levels of state anxiety post-intervention when compared to the control group. No significant interactions were found for social physique anxiety and for body image states. Overall, the findings suggest that a single yoga intervention can be immediately effective at lowering state anxiety in participants diagnosed with an eating disorder. However, a single yoga intervention might not be enough to reduce state social physique anxiety and body image states in the same participants. Limitations and clinical implications are discussed.
