Who Knows Us Best? Our Selves or Our Friends? The Differences Between Self- and Friend-Reported Measures of Job Satisfaction

McFarland, Zachery

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Arts (M.A.), Xavier University, Psychology.
Job satisfaction literature has relied primarily on self-report responses. This study sought to expand past research by using an “other rater” to rate job satisfaction and introduce the friend to do so. This study utilized a sample of realtors to investigate the differences between self and friend reports of job satisfaction. Although the novel hypotheses were not supported, this study suffered from a low sample size when collecting both self and friend-reports of job satisfaction. The low correlation between self-ratings and friend ratings of overall job satisfaction, r(29) = .12, p = .53, combined with the high mean scores of job satisfaction from the self-report group, (M = 4.69, SD = 0.47), shows that self-reporting of job satisfaction may not be accurate. Additionally, it may be influenced by ego protection to promote one’s own image, and workplace friends may have different insight into an individual’s workplace attitudes. Future research should replicate this study using a sample from a different industry in which employees work closely together, and should investigate other attitudinal constructs.
