Tattoos, piercings, unnaturally colored hair, and other body modifications have historically carried negative stereotypes. These negative stereotypes often follow people into the workplace, which could impact their overall job satisfaction. This study sought to expand upon past research by examining current attitudes towards body modifications in the workplace. A sample of participants was gathered using Amazon’s MTurk system to answer a series of questions related to job satisfaction, workplace dress codes, and the personality traits of agreeableness and openness to new experiences. Although the novel hypotheses were not supported, the correlation between agreeableness and the number of body modifications a participant had was significant, r(270) = -.22, p < .001, but in the opposite direction hypothesized. This opened dialogue around how researchers conceptualize agreeableness as a personality trait. As body modifications become more popular and accepted in society, it is important to forecast and assess how organizations should react to body modifications. Future research should use a more body modification-focused workplace dress code survey, as well as a labeled continuum approach to personality traits such as agreeableness and openness.
