Take a Vacation, You Hypocrite: Induced Hypocrisy at Work

Alba, Robert Oppenheimer Benjamin

Abstract Details

2022, Master of Science (M.S.), Xavier University, Psychology.
The present study tested the effect of a digitally administered induced hypocrisy procedure designed to motivate full-time employees within the U.S. to take more of their allotted vacation days. Contrary to hypotheses, no statistically significant differences in intended vacation-taking were observed between groups based on differential exposure to a vacation-specific induced hypocrisy procedure. However, following the procedure, each group increased intended vacation days relative to past vacation days by a statistically significant margin. Results suggest that a complete hypocrisy induction procedure may not be necessary to effect behavioral change intention in vacation-taking. Limitations and future research areas are discussed.
