Love and Loss: A Contemporary Song Cycle explores the topic of loving and losing a significant other, following in the tradition of nineteenth-century song cycles such as Winterreise and Die schone Mullerin by Franz Schubert, and Dichterliebe by Robert Schumann. This song cycle focuses on three types of love: loving oneself, unrequited love, and love for another person or significant other. These are emotions that most human beings experience at some point in their lives. The music and lyrics are primarily autobiographical, based on my experiences over the last few years. I used my personal journals of ideas and stories to construct the narrative. I believe that it is important to be honest in sharing my own trials and tribulations as a young adult today, the challenges of trying to balance love with other responsibilities including school, work, and family. This is a story that many younger adults and teenagers can relate to, and I hope that this work can be a source of inspiration and solace for others, to let them know that they are not alone in their struggles, and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
