Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss viable protective relay design schemes for Special Power Flow Controllers (SPFCs). This topic is of interest due to special considerations that are not normally accounted for in traditional relay design. Chief among these concerns is the fact that an SPFC will cause variable line impedance characteristics. SPFCs are inherently useful for transmission grid constraints due to allowing for precise control and variability of real, imaginary, and apparent power through an element in a network. While they could be used for similar purposes in distribution or sub transmission grids, they are typically not economical in such settings. Transmission system protective relay elements must abide by North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. This presents an interesting challenge to the usefulness of SPFCs, as it is difficult to find useful protective relay systems. Impedance based protective systems are efficient, proven reliable, and economic. Due to these properties, the typical transmission line is protected by impedance relays. This research is intended to investigate the feasibility of alternative protection systems given the problems associated with protecting an SPFC with impedance relays. This thesis has results that suggest it is feasible to protect an SPFC using current differential protection schemes.
