THE PATH NOT TAKEN: DISTINGUISHING INDIVIDUALS WHO COMPLETE SUICIDE FROM THOSE WHO DIE BY NATURAL CAUSES DESPITE A SHARED HISTORY OF SUICIDE ATTEMPT

Abstract Details

, Master of Arts, Case Western Reserve University, Psychology.
Individuals with multiple suicide attempts are a part of a group at higher risk for eventual suicide. The current study aimed to identify important variables that can be used to distinguish risk among this already high-risk group. Psychological autopsy procedures were used to evaluate individuals who died by natural causes (n = 28) compared to individuals who died by suicide (n = 65), all with a history of suicide attempt. Wave 1 included all available subject and Wave 2 matched groups based on age, race, and gender. Significant differences spanned gender, diagnosis, toxicology report, health stress, hopelessness, ambivalence, time since first attempt, and number of lifetime attempts. A discriminant function analysis was used to successfully predict type of death using clinical variables. Better understanding these constructs and the factors describing individuals who have a history of a suicide attempt may offer points of intervention in this known high-risk population.
