Knee wraps are commonly utilized in resistance exercise, particularly in the field of powerlifting, with the idea of providing a mechanical advantage at the knee joint. The elastic material stretches during descent of the back squat and is theorized to transfer the generated potential energy during the ascent to assist in lifting the load. Current research has only observed the effect of this mechanical ergogenic aid on performance, however research of its effect on post-exercise performance and immune cell expression is lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the influence of knee wraps on post-exercise force production and leukocyte counts and subsets. Twelve participants performed eight sets of ten repetitions of the back squat either with or without knee wraps. Blood samples were taken to observe immunological responses while post-exercise performance was observed using vertical jump, and isometric mid-thigh pull and isometric squat. Wearing knee wraps lessened the lymphocyte and granulocyte response compared to the unwrapped group, while performing the squat unwrapped resulted in a greater number of forced repetitions required.
