The Evolution of Sheng in Mainland China from 1949 to 2018

The sheng is a Chinese traditional, interruptive free-reed aerophone, consisting of a blow-pipe, bowl, and vertical resonating tubes. In the recent decades since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, this instrument has been significantly modified. In this thesis, by addressing the changes in Chinese society in this period and their influence upon the morphology of the sheng, I conclude that the sheng has been legendary in that, although its use has fallen in and out of favor according to social and political trends of Chinese music history, its players and makers have always adapted to the times, seizing on new developmental opportunities, and turning the loss of traditions, the political oppression, the pressure from western peers, and other dangers into opportunities for continued survival or growth.
