Directing Madness: Discovering and Portraying Meaning in Georg Buchner’s “Woyzeck”

Coon, Matthew Howard

Abstract Details

2011, Master of Arts, Miami University, Theatre.
Georg Buchner’s “Woyzeck” (1837) is an influential piece of theatre with a rich history and problematic meaning and was directed by the author as part of the 2009-2010 theatrical season at Miami University of Ohio. This thesis details and critically examines the process of analyzing and directing “Woyzeck” in an academic environment utilizing college students in major roles, and the challenges this creates. This thesis dramaturgically examines “Woyzeck” and the production version of the script, which is analyzed through a specific theoretical construct useful for deconstructing scripts and productions with fragmented meanings. This thesis also examines the design and production processes of this “Woyzeck” production in detail. It engages and examines the problems that arose throughout the production while offering some possible directorial and pedagogical solutions that may assist with future “Woyzeck” productions set in a collegiate environment.
