Estimating the Impact of Women's Education on the U.S. Suffrage Movement: An IV Approach

Abstract Details

2021, Master of Arts, Miami University, Economics.
It is no coincidence that the expansion of coeducation in the U.S. colleges and universities from 1870 to 1920, which led to overall higher educational attainment for women, shares a similar timeline and state diffusion pattern as the women's suffrage movement. This paper overcomes the endogeneity bias and is, to my best knowledge, the first to quantifies the impact of the levels of women's education on their enfranchisement. Through an extensive historical review, I identify the prevalence of male public college students as a viable instrument to isolate the casual relationship. The linear probability model indicates that a one standard deviation increase in the proportion of females holding degrees leads to a decadal suffrage likelihood 34 percentage points higher. The absolute number of college-educated females is also found to have a positive and significant impact.
