Abstract
Hybrid Systems Modeling combines one (or more) simulation methods with practices established outside the field of simulation. Such combinations have often been proposed based on Machine Learning (ML), for example to fine-tune a simulation model or embed simulated entities with the ability to observe and learn from their surroundings. Although ML has been used with simulations across many tasks, there are still specific application areas in which hybrid models have been underutilized. In this thesis, I developed hybrid models in which ML techniques are used jointly with three simulation techniques: Cellular Automata, Fuzzy Cognitive Maps, and Network Simulations. The two key tasks of interest pursued through these models are (i) the verification of simulation models, to ensure that code is correct; and (ii) the optimization of simulation models, to closely align them with a given evidence base. Key contributions of this thesis are to (i) design, implement, and evaluate novel ML-based processes to verify the implementation of simulation models by using their results as images; and (ii) enable domain experts to apply ML by fine-tuning a model and using it for decision-making activities. Sample applications throughout this thesis draw from human health, including biology and health behaviors.
