Abstract
Whiteboards are often accessible for use within an inpatient hospital setting. As a low-cost tool that is readily available, this project seeks to determine if the nursing staff's daily use of the bedside whiteboard for patient-specific goals impacts patient satisfaction. Standardizing a bedside whiteboard to create daily collaborative SMART goals between the patient and healthcare staff was trialed on two medical-surgical in-patient units. Questions relating to the domain of nurse-patient communication were identified from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) and Press Ganey surveys. Data was interpreted from September to December 2021 (pre-intervention) and compared to September to December 2022 (post-intervention). The results from this project were combined from the two units (2021 n = 78 and 2022 n = 81). Data was graphically represented in bar graph form and a line of best fit trended to determine that three out of the eight identified questions had a positive relationship with the whiteboard goal intervention. These questions addressed patients’ perceptions regarding nurse-patient communication and shared-decision making while in the hospital. Results suggest that individualized patient goals build trust and engage patients with a sense of ownership and participation in making shared decisions about their daily plan of care. Daily whiteboard goal use by healthcare staff has been shown to improve the awareness of shared decision-making and consideration of patient preferences when navigating the plan of care.
