Abstract
In running, dynamic stretching warm-ups are used to optimize performance while running, by increasing range of motion, decreasing muscle stiffness, and allowing the body to fully prepare for the task at hand. The purpose of this study was to examine the different durations of dynamic stretching to see if stretching duration has an effect on a runner's performance and overall state mood. Participants performed three different duration (i.e., 0 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds per stretch), randomized, dynamic stretching protocols prior to running 0.50 miles. The dynamic stretching exercises focused on the lower limb muscle groups, using sport-specific stretches. Pre- and post-mood surveys were also provided to further analyze total mood state disturbance among runners. Results indicate no significant difference between durations of 0 seconds, 15 seconds, and 30 seconds of dynamic stretching in regard to 0.50 mile performance times, as well as total mood disturbance. Overall, the results concluded that different durations in dynamic stretching prior to running do not influence the runner's performance, nor does it impact the individual's total mood disturbance. A notable limitation of this study was the small sample size (n=4) collected, which did not meet sufficient power and could have hindered the implications of results.
