Enduring Participation: Constraint Negotiation in the Establishment of Serious Leisure in Female Whitewater Kayakers

Abstract Details

2012, Master of Science (MS), Ohio University, Recreation Studies (Health and Human Services).
Female whitewater kayakers are failing to reach the upper echelon of paddle sports at a rate concurrent with their male counterparts. A mixed methods approach was used to investigate the constraints present in kayaking for women and techniques used to negotiate them. Twelve in depth semi-structured interviews with elite female kayakers were carried out and led to the development of an online survey instrument highlighting 15 particular constraints and 19 possible techniques as articulated by the interview respondents. Results obtained from the quantitative portion of the study showed that males and females differed significantly in their perceived level of constraint for 8 of the 15 constraints. They also significantly differed in the various techniques used to negotiate these constraints. After synthesizing the two sets of data (quantitative and qualitative) women benefit from, and actively seek out fellow female kayakers. Female specific programming offerings should be expanded or developed within private providers as well as national bodies, and certified kayak instructors should be made aware of the differences noted herein between male and female kayakers with regard to their interpretation of risk, response to stress, and needs to be successful.
