The Effect of Ethanol upon the Catalytic Hydrogenation of Lactose to Lactitol

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Science (MS), Ohio University, Chemical Engineering (Engineering and Technology).
To study the impact that an aqueous ethanol solvent had upon the hydrogenation of lactose to lactitol, a hydrogenation experimental system was constructed and a series of hydrogenation experiments were performed. This project details the design and construction of the hydrogenation experimental system, along with the preliminary testing, which confirmed the system’s viability for conducting catalytic hydrogenation reactions. The product solutions were analytically characterized using a high performance liquid chromatography method. The hydrogenation of other carbohydrates has been observed to proceed faster in solvents composed of aqueous alcohols than in water, so to test if lactose experienced a similar lactose hydrogenation, experiments were performed in pure water as the solvent and in a solvent of 80:20 water:ethanol by weight. In subsequent analysis it was not observed that a higher lactose conversion or an increase in reaction rate existed for the experiments carried out in aqueous ethanol.
