Abstract
This project explores the transcultural and transhistorical impact of the Victorian novel on the culture, politics, and storytelling traditions of writers, artists, intellectuals of the postcolonial Bengal, India and addresses the question: why should someone born in contemporary South Asia, so far removed in space, time and culture from Victorian England care about its literature? Over 5 chapters, the project follows chronologically the evolving relationship between the Bengali middle class with western modernity over a course of 150 years, early 1800s to 1960s, and examines how the English-educated Bengali middle class of India have historically consumed and indigenized the tropes, characters, and reformist liberal ethos from the novels of Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Anthony Trollope into their own Bengali novels and popular postcolonial films in the 1950s and ’60s, in order to address their own grievances and concerns with industrial modernity.
