Digestibility of rumen undegraded protein (RUP)and microbial protein in the intestine determines amino acid uptake through the gut. Diets with higher RUP digestibility have been shown to increase milk production. Bovine somatotropin (bST) administration to dairy cows increases milk production. The objectives of this research were to: (1) determine the lactation response (volume and components) to plane of N nutrition (PN) and (2) to determine whether there is an interaction between PN and the lactation response to bST. Sixty Holstein cows (32 primiparous, 28 multiparous) were assigned to one of two dietary treatments 21 to 28 days after calving. Both diets contained (DM basis) 32.5% corn silage, 17.5% alfalfa hay, 10.0% whole cottonseed, and 40% of a pelleted concentrate made primarily of shelled corn. The conventional plane of nutrition (CoPN) diet included a commodity-based, ring-dried blood meal. The advanced plane of nitrogen nutrition (AdPN) diet contained a high digestibility, spray-dried blood meal substituted for the ring-dried blood meal, and 0.0475% 2 -hydroxy-4-(methylthio)-butanoic acid (HMB) and 0.15% isopropyl ester of HMB (HMBi) (DM basis), as a source of supplemental methionine and digestible lysine. Neither dry matter intake was affected by treatments nor body weight or body condition score. The bST treated animals had increased NDF digestibility. Treatment with bST increased milk yield (2.0 kg/d) and protein yield (70 g/d), whereas PN had no effect on milk production. There was an interaction between bST and PN which positively increased milk yield, suggesting that manipulation of the diet and administrating bST can increase milk yield in a nonadditive fashion.
