Carebot: Effects of anthropomorphism and language from a healthcare robot

Brewer, Jennifer Jasmine

Abstract Details

2016, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Communication.
This study explored the effects of anthropomorphism and language use by a social robotic entity. Specifically, this study examined the evaluative results of higher or lower levels of anthropomorphism and the use of individualistic “I” or collectivist “we” pronoun use, from a robotic healthcare aide. An online survey was conducted using static images and experimental vignettes to elicit assessments of the robots likeability, and the participant’s willingness to interact with the robot. This study found no significant main or interaction effects of anthropomorphism or pronoun use. Familiarity with common speaking agents and existing robots was found to influence the participant’s willingness to interact with the robot. Implications of the influence of prior exposure are discussed.
