The growing interest in small-scale eVTOL multirotor vehicles has motivated model-based research efforts to improve aerodynamic efficiency, increase autonomous capability, and support integration into the National Airspace System. Multirotor vehicles have propulsion dominated dynamics that experience a wide range of operating conditions spanning ascent, hover, forward flight, and decent. Accurately capturing rotor performance across the operational envelope is challenging due to complex aerodynamic interactions that occur between rotors and airframe surfaces. The primary objective of this work was to study the influence of multirotor interaction effects on a small quadrotor vehicle using isolated rotor, bare-airframe and powered-airframe static wind tunnel results. Aerodynamic interaction model development was explored utilizing system identification tools and incorporated into a previously developed NASA quadrotor flight dynamic simulation. The aerodynamic interaction model improved the accuracy of the simulation in comparison to free-flight and static wind tunnel test results withheld from model development. Comparisons between models of different fidelity were completed to demonstrate the effects of aerodynamic interactions on model accuracy and provide recommendations for model fidelity requirements.
