Risk analysis of aerosolized algae atmospheric transport in Northwestern Ohio from the western basin of Lake Erie

Abstract Details

2022, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Atmospheric Sciences.
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) create aerosolized cyanotoxins that are known to cause respiratory issues, especially for people with preexisting conditions. This study examines atmospheric transport of cyanotoxins to determine the spatial extent of populations at risk in Northwestern Ohio. Analysis will focus on creating a risk index for the inland transport of aerosolized toxins during the algal seasons of 2015-2018 in western Lake Erie using HAB concentration, wind speed and direction, and distance from bloom center. It was found that HAB intensities were greatest during the years of 2015 and 2017 with maximum intensities of 63.98 and 24.05, respectively. A comparison between HYSPLIT runs and wind speed and direction data from a NOAA buoy in Lake Erie showed a strong correlation that allowed the buoy data to be used in calculating risk. Risk analysis maps were generated that showed higher risk when HAB intensity was greater and winds were blowing inland. Risk was always greatest in the northwest Ohio shoreline closest to the bloom centers and weakest to the southeast further from the blooms. The greatest risk was 957.65 in September of 2015 and the minimum was 68.83 in October of 2016. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop an early-warning system for potential aerosolized toxin event.
