Desire Lines: Chasing the Horizon

Hendricks, Breana

Abstract Details

2025, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Art.
My ceramics practice collects and abstracts shared ancestral experiences in the Caribbean and observations of exoticism and abundance in pre-colonial Jamaica, informing an understanding of manufactured leisure on island vacations. The work presented for my thesis exhibition maps how transformative relationships in the material histories of sugar gratifies our fundamental desire for sweetness. Assembled vignettes of ceramic sculptures, slip-casted sugar derived produce found in the Caribbean and the United States accompany various hand-built figural forms. I incorporate sourced crops found in Caribbean climates: coconuts, sugarcane, and a banana casted from imported shipments to the United States. This document explores possibilities in reidentifying these agricultural products, relying on the black body as a site for geographical experimentation.
