Abstract
Man's fascination with mirrors has long been documented. Over the years, many a different materials have been used to make mirrors. Obsidian (volcanic rock) mirrors were found to be used in Turkey as early as 6000 BCE. The advent of Bronze Age led to the use of copper and its alloys, predominantly bronze, to make these mirrors. Mirrors made of tin bronzes were found in places from China in the Far East to Mesopotamia and also Egypt. The presence of high tin bronzes though, was mostly noted in China and later in India. The present study involved the analyses of South Indian bronze mirrors, Aranmula Kannadi, Aranmula from the place of its origin and Kannadi standing for mirror in Tamil language. Bronze is a binary alloy of copper and tin. It is one of the most employed emerging materials over the past 4000 years. The copper tin phase diagram is very complex. This is due to the high temperature difference between the melting points of the two metals and also because of the lattices' size and shape. To understand the material and its solidification sequence, different material analysis techniques were used including but not limited to Scanning Electron Microscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and X-Ray Diffraction, Ellipsometer and Knoop Hardness Tester. The main result in the thesis is the identification of the main alloy of the mirror as being quasicrystalline. This is the first time the phase been identified as quasicrystalline although it has been in use since around 2000 BCE. The alloy is used even today for making mirrors. A detailed metallurgical analysis of the alloy is reported in this thesis.
