An Historical Analysis of the Perception of Pain & Pain Management Methods from 1800-1945

Abstract Details

2020, BA/MA, Walsh University, Nursing.
The United States is in the midst of a very overwhelming opioid epidemic. Opioid addiction, overdosing, and opioid-related deaths are prominent both in society and healthcare today. Gaining knowledge of opioid prescribing patterns in the 19th and 20th centuries helps give a better understanding of the current-day epidemic. An Historical Analysis of Perception of Pain and Pain Management Methods from 1800-1945 delves into various methods of pain relief to see what method(s) were used most during this time period. This research unveils some patterns and themes that suggest over-prescribing of narcotics/opioids even hundreds of years ago.
