The Historical Origins of Mindfulness-Meditation and its Use by Nurses and Nursing Students as a Stress Reduction Intervention

Abstract Details

2020, Bachelor of Science, Walsh University, Honors.
Individuals preparing for and working in the nursing profession are subjected to an immense amount of stress. Nursing students are faced with difficult class work that they must safely apply within the clinical setting with a patient’s life in their hands. A nursing student’s stress ultimately stems from their intense academic demands. Professional nurses are also faced with the same challenge of managing stress. Burnout can negatively impact patient care, which is the result of stressors that stem from a lack of effective resources and an inability to deal with a complex workload. Nurses can experience physical, emotional, or mental problems as a result of these occupational stressors. These complications can put the safety of the patient at risk if nurses are unable to appropriately manage their stress at work nor outside of work. This problem requires attention because nursing students are developing not only clinical skills, but lifestyle skills during their school years that they will carry with them into their careers. If these future nurses cannot adapt to the occupational stressor of a heavy workload it could potentially lead to burnout. A Buddhist practice known as mindfulness-meditation has been widely used throughout the last several decades in medical practice to decrease stress. In its’ religious context, mindfulness-meditation creates a non-judgmental awareness of the present moment and focuses on alleviating suffering by accepting the reality of the current experience. The goal of this study was to examine the historical origins of mindfulness-meditation in order to connect this medical practice to its' historical roots and to explore the widespread use of this intervention in a population that is subjected to a high stress career path.
