Improving New Nurses’ Well-Being Through Mindfulness

Abstract Details

2023, Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree Program in Population Health Leadership DNP, Xavier University, Nursing.
New registered nurses (RNs) working in the acute care hospital setting face stressful workplace environments which has a negative impact on nurse well-being. Increased RN turnover and high RN vacancies in hospitals in the post-pandemic period are critically impacting operations of hospitals and have a negative impact on the cost of, access to and quality of patient care. Educating nurses on mindfulness has been shown to improve well-being of RNs in formal nurse residency programs. At a 300-bed, Midwest, community hospital a quality improvement project was conducted using the plan, do, study, act (PDSA) framework to measure the mindful awareness and attention scale (MAAS) score of nurse residents before and after education on three mindfulness techniques. Pre- and post- measurements were taken one month apart. The cohort of 16 nurse residents demonstrated improved mean MAAS scores after the intervention of mindfulness education. Higher MAAS scores are indicative of improved well-being. Improving well-being of RNs must remain a top priority for healthcare administrators and expansion of interventions to support well-being, like mindfulness education, beyond the target population of new nurses to include experienced nurses and other frontline clinicians is warranted.
