Abstract Details

2007, Doctor of Philosophy, University of Akron, Chemistry.
Metal carbene complexes are used extensively as catalysts. Silver carbene complexes are used as catalysts, transfer agents for metathesis reactions, and antimicrobials in the field of medicine. This dissertation focuses on the synthesis of 1,2-diimidazolylbenzene and its derivatives, N-heterocyclic compounds (NHC) which were subsequently used as the starting materials of silver carbene complexes synthesed by reacting with silver (I) oxide and providing silver complexes of NHCs. In addition, NHCs were modified at the substituent groups of nitrogen atoms within the imidazole rings to advance their physical properties. All compounds were analytically characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental analysis (EA), and X-ray crystallography for characterization. Because fossil fuel is the major source of energy in daily life but its cost is exceptionally high with the cost tendency increasing, novel kinds of fuels are being explored and developed. For instance, pure liquid hydrogen is being used for superior fuel application. A fuel cell is an apparatus that uses hydrogen conversion to create energy through an electrochemical reaction. The proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) is a significant component in the fuel cell which performs as a polymer electrolyte. This research focuses on the synthesis pathway of poly (vinylimidazole), PVI, and its derivatives which could be applied in the fuel cell as PEMs. PVI was readily soluble in several kinds of solvents, including water, and therefore, PVI was inapplicable to use as a PEM. Consequently, that PVI was modified to develop the appropriate solubility.
