In the field of biomechanics, Finite Element (FE) Analysis is a popular technique for calculating stress, strain and deformations of bony structures. FE modeling consists of simulating biomechanical testing on computer models, which represents the structure of interest in terms of cross-sectional area, material properties etc.To obtain a FE Model, the 3D coordinates of the structure in 3D space are required. A common method of obtaining the coordinates of a structure is from its CT /MRI scan image. Using commercially available software, 2D CT/MRI images are reconstructed to give a 3D model. However, these techniques are time consuming, expensive and prone to user errors. The goal of this study was to employ a new method for 3D scanning and reconstruction of hard tissues. Here, a displacement laser sensor was used for 3D scanning of a bone structure and a FE model was obtained for the same. The laser sensor had an accuracy of ± 0.1mm, was relatively inexpensive and once the assembly was designed, any number of specimens could be scanned. This technique drastically reduces the time and cost as compared to current conventional techniques.
