Geckos are known for their extraordinary adhesive locomotor system, allowing them to deftly navigate vertical and inverted substrates like no other reptile. Two fundamental properties of the gecko locomotor system, the nano-structures (setae) responsible for generating adhesive forces and the digital hyperextension that makes possible the rapid stick and release seen have been studied in considerable detail over the last 10 years. Geckos also have the ability to self-clean, making repeated use of their adhesive system possible. This study looks at the effects of digital hyperextension on the rate of self cleaning, since it was previously thought that digital hyperextension did not play a significant role in self-cleaning. We hypothesized that digital hyperextension will increase the recovery rate (time to reach clean forces) of the gecko’s adhesive capabilities following fouling. We found a significant increase in recovery rates when geckos were allowed to digital hyperextend, and believe that the active mechanisms of digital hyperextension should be considered in all future endeavors surrounding geckos and biologically inspired design.
