Abstract
The benefit of a medical imaging examination in terms of its ability to yield an accurate diagnosis depends on the quality of both the image and the image interpretation. During the past half century, nuclear medicine has grown tremendously due to advances in image detector systems and computer technology. However, conventional nuclear imaging systems still suffer from relatively low detection efficiency thereby affecting the spatial resolution of the system. Coded Aperture imaging is a technique that offers improved detection efficiency. This technique is discussed in this thesis. This technique offers improved photon-collection efficiency over the collimator systems commonly used with high-energy radiation and consequently offers the possibility of improved spatial resolution and contrast. The aperture chosen for this study is the annulus, due to its advantages which will be discussed in the later chapters. We also present the image collection and processing technique and finally a comparison of the collimator systems with the annular technique. Qualitative comparisons were made by visually inspecting the images obtained by the two techniques while quantitative comparisons were made by statistically testing their modulation transfer functions for significant differences. Both of the comparisons indicated that the annular technique was successful and gave images with increased spatial resolution and contrast.
