Abstract
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of item characteristics (e.g., readability, item difficulty, and item type) and person characteristics (e.g., ethnic identity, cognitive ability, sensitivity to stigmatization and test perceptions) on the perception of item insensitivity. In this study, an item was considered “insensitive” when it contained construct-irrelevant information that created a distraction for a particular group of test takers (e.g., African Americans). To date, no study has focused on how the characteristics of both the test item and the sensitivity reviewer can influence ratings of insensitivity. The goal of the current study was to fill the void in testing literature and practice. The model outlined in the current paper was tested with a multilevel modeling or “nested” data approach. The results of this study indicated that reviewers’ insensitivity ratings are influenced by both item characteristics (e.g., readability, item difficulty, item type) and person characteristics (e.g., sensitivity to stigmatization, fairness perceptions, cognitive ability, gender, etc.). Exploratory analyses revealed that test performance was also found to have a significant impact on ratings.
