Cross-Correlation Of Biomedical Images Using Two Dimensional Discrete Hermite Functions

Searching for a part of an image within a larger image or within an image database may be done with the method of image cross-correlation. Cross-correlation for one-dimensional (1D) signals has been shown to be able to be done in an efficient manner using discrete Hermite functions. This study proposes to achieve efficient cross correlation of images using two-dimensional (2D) discrete Hermite functions. It will be shown that the cross-correlations of any two discrete Hermite functions has a simple, easily defined, and sparse structure. 2D discrete Hermite functions constructed initially are applied to cross-correlation of general images, and the cross-correlation results thus achieved are expected to be equivalent to those achieved by standard cross correlation methods, but to be faster computationally. A fast and efficient method for cross correlation would be very useful in searching through medical images for particular sub images. This effort to make an efficient method for cross correlation is discussed in this research. This study shows that the 2D Hermite filtered images have the same cross correlation peak as the original images. Future work could make this technique much faster computationally.
