Simple Fabrication of Hierarchical Multiscale Patterned Flexible PDMS Film and Ice-retarding Property Study

Abstract Details

2013, Master of Science in Polymer Engineering, University of Akron, Polymer Engineering.
Hierarchical structures in nature inspired development of artificial micro-nano hierarchical structures in recent years, because these structures exhibit unique properties like tunable adhesion and wetting. We demonstrate a simple yet versatile method to fabricate micro-nano structured surface based on combination of PDMS nano-imprinting and UVO lithography. Nanoscale patterned PDMS is fabricated by imprinting digital recording media discs (CD/DVD) pattern. The micro pattern was then built on the surface by selective densification of PDMS by exposing it to ultraviolet-ozone radiation through a larger patterned mask like TEM grid or wire mesh. The nanoimprinted pattern remains unaffected during the UVO treatment. We observed that tunable hierarchical structures with height up to 600 nm can be created by simply controlling UVO exposure time from 1 hr to 6 hrs. The simplicity of this method provides potential applications in various fields such as superhydrophocity, microfludics and solar cell. Besides, icephobicity of flexible patterned PDMS is studied. Ice-phobocity experiments were carried out in a controlled humidity and temperature chamber. DVD patterned PDMS film were cooled to -5.3 oC at a relative humidity of 65%, which shows better icephobicity than flat and CD patterned PDMS in terms of ice retarding time. Ice forming property is also studied with different relative humidities: 55%, 65%, 75% and 85%. The ice retarding time of DVD patterned PDMS surface with relative humidity 55%, 75% and 85% is similar shorter than the one with relative humidity of 65%. It shows that both of too high (75%, 85%) or too low (55%) relative humidity are bad for the performance of designed icephobic surface.
