Abstract
Self-stratifying coatings are promising coating systems, which can provide two major advantages. First, self-stratifying coatings can decrease the economic cost since two coatings can be applied in only one application. Second, self-stratifying coatings can improve the interlayer bonding, thus less chance of inter layer adhesion failure is expected. The goal of this thesis was to develop a self-stratified two-phase coating system based on different surface tension mechanism. Epoxide and acrylic were chosen as the two phases, since epoxide can provide excellent adhesion to the metal substrate and excellent corrosion resistance due to the secondary hydroxyl group, while acrylic copolymers can provide better flexibility, durability and resistance to ultraviolet degradation. A series of low, medium, high fluorinated acrylic copolymers containing methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, and 2,2,2- trifluoroethyl methacrylate were synthesized by free radical polymerization. Epoxide was inorganically modified by tetraethyl orthosilicate oligomer. Acrylic copolymers and epoxide derivatives were characterized by FTIR, 1H, 13C, and 19F NMR, GPC and mass spectrometry methods. The self-stratified coatings were characterized by Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) with integrated Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), the mapping function showed how the elements fluorine and silicon were distributed along the cross section area, which is a good indication for the stratification.
