Abstract
This thesis considers the manuscript journals of Richard Stonley, a teller of the Elizabethan exchequer. It reviews who Stonley was and why he wrote these journals. It analyzes the modes of reading the texts evince. And it discusses the material construction and transmission of the journals over time and space. In doing so, this work elucidates the complex composition of a notable early modern journal, and it sheds crucial light on the reading and writing habits of a remarkably understudied individual.
