The Preparation of Gold Nanoparticles for Multi-Functional Surface

Abstract Details

2015, Master of Science, University of Akron, Polymer Science.
Gold nanoparticles on the surface have many applications such as substrate for Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) and catalyst. The gold nanoparticles arrays can generate localized surface plasmon (LSP) to enhanced the electric field of incident light. Also, the gold nanoparticles with diameters below ~3.5 nm have unexpected catalytic properties which can be used in selective oxidation reaction. In our research, we demonstrate two ways to prepare gold nanoparticles with different scales by the method of evaporation with mask and wet chemistry. The anodic alumina (AAO) with parallelly aligned pores was utilized as the mask, where the pore sizes are ~80 and ~250 nm. With help of gold e-beam evaporation, the gold nanoparticles arrays on the substrate can be obtained with the removal of the alumina mask. A wet chemistry method is explored to limit the particle size in which chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) as gold precursor to synthesis gold nanoparticles. By using different redox agent, we can prepare gold nanoparticles with different diameter which is ~20, ~5 nm and even gold cluster Au25.
