Corrosion of steel structures is a constantly occurring process and causes significant financial loss and physical damage to civil infrastructure and many industries. Economic necessity and safety concerns demand the ability to evaluate and assess the remaining strength capacity of steel structures that are subject to corrosion damage. The research presented in this thesis aimed to develop an analytical methodology for evaluating corrosion damage to steel structures. An analytical tool based on the American Institute of Steel Construction design procedures was developed and demonstrated for the remaining moment capacity of steel I-beams as a function of thickness loss. The model was organized in such a way as to generate data tables that incrementally calculate the progressive loss of moment strength as loss of material occurs. In doing so, the model was able to graphically reflect patterns of strength deterioration and changes in governing limit state, making quantitative connections between loss of material and available remaining moment strength. The model was developed for a uniform corrosion damage pattern, The model assumed damage occurred along the entire length of the beam. With the knowledge of anticipated corrosion rate, this model may also be used to predict future remaining moment capacity as a function of time, allowing for better lifetime cost analysis and maintenance scheduling. The analytical tool was developed to be customizable so that it can quickly accommodate a range of corrosion degradation patterns and applications simply by changing parameters that are built into the model.
