In the field of advanced functional nanomaterial design, fabrication and processing, the “bottom-up” approach based on supramolecular self-assembly of soft matter is much more promising than traditional “top-down” approach. Herein, the careful molecular design, synthetic route, and a comprehensive investigation of the self-assembly behavior of one series of POSS-based tetra-headed giant surfactants with a single polystyrene (PS) tail in the bulk was fully presented. The molecular architecture was originated form previously reported single-headed DPOSS-PSn to tetra-headed 4DPOSS-PSn, where hydrophilic DPOSS cages are connected with hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) chain. Synthetic route of this series of novel hybrid polymeric amphiphiles is conducted by using the sequential “click-type” reactions, with not only highly precisely defined chemical structures but also relatively controllable molecular architectures. Further investigation on the self-assembly behaviors of the samples in the bulk state proves that phase separation between hydrophilic DPOSS cages domain and hydrophobic PS tails domain easily takes place through thermal annealing at certain temperature. Interestingly, the self-assembled microstructures are not only determined by the difference of volume fractions of the two drastic components, but are also affected by the molecular architecture. The self-assembly behaviors in the bulk of POSS-based giant surfactants are unique due to their sensitivity to molecular architecture, which provides us some further understanding in developing new hybrid nanomaterials.
