OUTPATIENT PHYSICIAN OFFICE STAFFING MODEL USING DISCRETE EVENT SIMULATION

Abstract Details

2016, Master of Science, University of Akron, Mechanical Engineering.
A physician’s office is a clinical facility in which medical doctors (usually general practitioners) can treat patients. The physician’s office plays an important role in healthcare because it is usually the first place for a sick patient to be treated and even a healthy person visits a physician’s office once or twice a year for a regular physical examination. Depending on working areas, staffing needs usually includes schedulers, a manager, secretaries, nurses, doctors, and medical assistants. There are inflexible and inconsistent non-provider staffing ratios among the outpatient physician’s office which may create staff and patient dissatisfaction. The current staffing state has negative impacts because patient waiting time is still higher than what we expected and cannot meet patient satisfactions. There is also a lack literature to quantitatively understand and predict variables, such as the relationship in outpatient staffing models, the workload between patients, phone calls, and paperwork. To cover this gap, in this research, we analyzed data from one outpatient office. A discrete simulation model was built to help the staffing dynamics and make optional decisions. Finally, it can help us predict the optimal staffing number of various alternative scenarios.
