Synthesis and Self-assembly of Sequences Precise Giant Molecular Chains Based on POSS Nanoparticles

To study the effect of monomer connecting sequences of the giant molecular chains on their self-assembly behaviors, we designed two giant molecular sequence isomers with exactly the same chemical composition but different connecting sequences of hydrophobic and hydrophilic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles. The hydrophobic POSS used here is BPOSS withseven isobutyl groups on its corners; while the hydrophilic POSS is DPOSS with 14 hydroxyl groups on its corners. The sequence isomers of BDB and DBB were synthesized via sequentially performed esterification, ring-opening reactions and thiol-ene “click” couplings. The chemical structures of the giant molecules were well characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and MALDI-TOF spectroscopy. Self-assembly behaviors in solid state were investigated by small angle scattering (SAXS). Double gyroids and hexagonally packed cylindrical phase were obtained by DBB and DBD respectively, demonstrated that the connecting sequence plays an important role in dictating material properties.
